Classical and Historical tactical game modes

Empires Under Sails supports different ways to play tactical battles.

Classical Tactical Game

The Classical Tactical Game uses a more direct turn-based structure. Ships activate, move, fire, grapple, board, and resolve actions in a clear sequence. This mode is useful for players who want maximum control and a traditional tactical wargame rhythm.

It is ideal for learning the system, testing scenarios, and playing battles where the player wants to manage each decision ship by ship.

Historical Tactical Game

The Historical Tactical Game uses a WEGO-style planning approach. Players prepare orders, priorities, crew assignments, movement intentions, fire preferences, and close combat choices before the turn is resolved.

Both sides then execute their orders through a resolution sequence, creating a more simultaneous and realistic feeling of naval command. This mode is especially suited for PBEM games and for players who want battles to feel less like perfect-control chess and more like command under uncertainty.

PBEM and AI support

The tactical system also supports PBEM play and AI-controlled ships. This allows battles to be played against the computer, exchanged by email, or resolved with one or both sides under AI control.
